Last week I mentioned the After Hours event Gamespot held in San Francisco over the weekend. Unfortunately I wasn’t feeling very well so I couldn’t make it up there. But I handed off my digital camera to a recent addition to the Capcom team, Tony. He was kind enough to do this great write-up of the event, which I will post here along with the pictures he took.

Note that all the pictures here are thumbnails, so click on them to view the full size versions.

So, I have the unique pleasure of writing this little mini-blog because our resident blogger, who you are all already familiar with, missed out on going to the GameSpot After Hours event with us this past Saturday. Okay, so it wasn’t really his fault. Brian works extremely hard around here and we don’t blame him for needing a little R&R.

So what’s up, everyone? I’m Tony, fresh out of college and the newest addition to the marketing team here at Capcom. I’m into almost all types of video games with the exception of sports games. I especially like RPGs and RTS games, but my forte is first person shooters. I also like coffee ice cream, Everybody Loves Raymond re-runs and long walks on the beach.

Since I’m the new guy around the office, I’m pretty much willing to go to any event they wanna send me to. A video game show with all the latest and greatest games, cold beer, hot girls and live music? That’s a pretty cool place to be at for “work,’ you know? Alright, so I lied about the hot girls, but I still had a blast. The event had tons of cool stuff to check out. I got to sit in on one of the private Bioshock demos behind closed doors, which was very cool, as well as an unofficial Counter-Strike tourney (which incidentally, my team swept all 8 out of 8 rounds baby! Shout out to the 5 other dudes I played with, I never got your names, but our legacy will live on forever!).

Ahem. So anyway, the After Hours event was much smaller and more intimate compared to the likes of E3 and TGS. You can get the full rundown on GameSpot’s site, so I’ll just show you a few pictures and maybe toss in a few comments for good measure. So without further ado…

Here’s the massive line of gamers waiting to get in the event and wreak some havoc.

Outside Line

The only thing standing in their way: this Dead Rising fan who’s faced with the challenge of finding creative ways to kill hordes of zombies armed only with a doo-rag.

Once inside, it was hard to miss this Lost Planet sign.

Sign

It was sitting right in the middle of our showcase, surrounded by eight LCD HD monitors and Xbox 360s which were all networked and running a multiplayer demo of Lost Planet.

Here are a few shots of Frank and Jack, two of Capcom’s marketing gurus, getting some playing time in before the show started. Little did they know, it’d be one of their last chances to play because the area was packed with frag-happy Lost Planet fans for the rest of the night.

The guy on the right in the first pic, that’s Jack, he’s my boss.

Just the other day I walked in his office while he was involved in another multiplayer frag fest of Lost Planet and let me tell you, his gaming face is priceless. Let me help you visualize it for a second. Try to remember back to the last time you played dodge ball and picture the ball rolling neatly into your hands just as someone trips about two feet in front of you. Imagine the sheer anticipation and excitement of being moments away from transforming an innocent red ball into a rubber killing machine as you nail the poor guy with full force. That’s exactly what Jack looked like: bug-eyed, tongue hanging slightly out of his mouth and just an overall “evil scientist” type look going on.

Back to the event… He was clearly itching to play the whole night and seemed to be a little antsy from having to just watch from the sidelines. This was obvious from how he hovered over the shoulders of all the players, interjecting wise words of gameplay advice when they least expected it, and basking in the hilarity of watching some not-so-brilliant moves on the part of the event attendees. And, you can’t blame him – it’s hard to keep quiet when you witness someone stick a grenade against a wall, run up to the wall and stand there until it explodes in his face. Anyway, the reason I brought this up wasn’t to poke fun at my boss, because he’s obviously going to read this. It’s just refreshing to see someone his age (not that you’re old, Jack!) be so excited about a video game, and clearly not just because it’s a Capcom title, but because it’s just one of the coolest games coming out for the 360, hands down.

Here are a few shots of some Lost Planet fans involved in a match and the people who were waiting patiently behind them.

Here’s Robert, who was also at the event.

He’s a sucker for a girl with big guns.

That’s it for the event!

Just last night I was testing out the other multiplayer levels that will be included on the upcoming demo (we only had one playable level at the event) and they look insanely gorgeous. It looks so good you’ll be tempted to just walk around and bask in its glory before being snapped back into reality by the sound of gunfire, explosions and VS mayhem—or someone hitting you square in the back with a rocket. Not that it happened to me. I’m just saying. Kind of like the calm before the storm. But, Brian already wrote about how impressive these new levels look, so I’ll just leave it at that.

There you have it, folks.

Here are just a few more pics from the night’s festivities.

I also chatted with Jack this week a little to see how the reception was for LP at the event. He said that people were literally having a blast with the game. People were saying things from, “I’ve played the demo and this is definitely a must-buy,” to “this is gonna be one of the biggest games next year,” to “now I have a reason to buy a 360.” I’m not surprised, because LP really is a blast to play, both single player and multiplayer.

He also said:

People also described the game as “the bomb,” “tight,” “sick” – all of which I believe means cool.

See, he’s not that old. Hehe.

That’s all. Look for my next post soon.
